“The heavens declare the glory of God.” In spite of “the fool” having “said in his heart, there is no God,” the above statement, which forms the opening words of the 19th Psalm, is an admirable fact, which can be grasped and appreciated by all classes and kinds of God-fearing men and women. “And the firmament showeth His handiwork.” These words are as true now as they were when they were written by the Sweet Psalmist of Israel hundreds of years ago. The Psalmist goes on to say : “Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge.” Let us listen to the “speech”’ uttered, and profit by the “knowledge” shown daily. “There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard,” yet the heavens speak not in an unknown tongue, nor to any one nation, but the significance of what they declare may be understood by enlightened men of various nationalities; and without the gift or the cultivation of tongues. “Their line (or rule) is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.” This shows that the heavenly bodies have influence, power or “rule” all through the earth. “In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun.’’ These statements harmonize with the statements made in the beginning of Inspired Writ, viz. : that the sun and moon are “two great lights” which were made by the Creator to give light upon the earth— and to rule over the day and over the night, and divide the light from the darkness— and also to be for signs and for seasons and for days and years.” ~The Earth, (Vol III, Nos. 35-36)

“The narrative of the latest Antarctic Expedition, under Captain Scott of the ship Discovery, is on the table before me. I read this report with the greatest avidity. My first, and, indeed, my chief, anxiety was to find some genuine evidence of the midnight sun down south, in keeping with stories which were circulated by the men of the ship Morning, on their landing in England. At the time that these curious reports were circulated, I judged them to be thoroughly irresponsible, and now that I have read Captain Cook’s highly responsible narrative I remain in just the same state of mind as before, in that, from first to last there is not the faintest mention of any Midnight Sun, or of any continued daylight,—but the whole phraseology of the report is distinctly in opposition to any such conclusion, and I find the 24 hours invariably divided into the usual intervals of morning and evening, noon and night. The sun also is spoken ot as going and coming, and as rising, and as being below the horizon, and consequently as setting also. This appears to be about September, and is of the utmost importance, in that the point of sunrise is clearly indicated in one instance, showing that the sun actually rose about East North East—northerly—and lit up the sides of the mountains facing north. This point of sunrise is of the utmost importance, because, if the earth were a globe, the sun must have risen about due East, and the eastern sides of the mountains would have been lit up “by the glow of the sun” when “still below the horizon;” whereas the passage goes on to say that “the other sides were dark and shadowy.” ~The Earth (Vol III, Nos. 41-42) pages 298-299.

“The lights which are exhibited in lighthouses are seen by navigators at distances at which, according to the scale of the supposed “curvature” given by astronomers, they ought to be many hundreds of feet, in some cases, down below the line of sight! For instance: the light at Cape Hatteras is seen at such a distance (40 miles) that, according. to theory, it ought to be nine-hundred feet higher above the level of the sea than it absolutely is, in order to be visible! “We will now pass on to the consideration of the well-known illustration in support of the rotundity of the earth, namely : observing a ship sailing directly towards the horizon. As has been stated, at a certain distance from the observer, the hull of the ship will gradually disappear from his view ; and when that is quite out of sight, it will be observed that the masts will also disappear in a similar way. Now, it will readily be perceived that the mode of disappearance would happen in the event of the surface, on which the ship is sailing, being an arc—in fact, in no other way could the ship disappear; but by a short consideration of the case, we may be led to question whether or not this same mode of disappearance of the ship might occur if the surface on which the ship is sailing be a PLANE. The following fact has been noted, namely ; that a ship lost to view under the circumstances just mentioned, has been seen after its disappearance by the observer using a powerful telescope. The whole of the ship has thus been brought back to sight. Might one argue about this, that the ship was lost to sight because it was so far advanced along the convex arc that the surface of the water came between the ship and the sight of the observer ? Those who maintain that this experiment is a proof of the rotundity of the earth, would tell us so. If it is, what is to be said to the ship’s being brought back to view again by means of the telescope ? Optics tell us that any object travelling from us (as the ship in the above instance) would disappear in a similar way, in the case of the surface between us and the object being -s. plane. If an observer standing at the end of a long street observe the rows of gas lamps on either side, and their apparent diminution of size as the distance increases, he will see that those nearly lost to view in the extreme distance will present to him nothing but their tops, the lower portions being quite lost to view. If a train be watched closely as it travels from an observer, the wheels and lower parts of the carriages will disappear before the top of the train will do so.” ~E. H. “MARCONI’S TRIUMPH.—The success of Signor Marconi in bridging the Atlantic by means of wireless telegraphy has been a matter of especial interest at Dover, as it was while he was carrying out his first cross-Channel demonstration between the South Foreland Lighthouse and Boulogne that Signor Marconi made his first intimation of the possibility of transatlantic success with his system. This was in 1899, when even cross-channel wireless telegraphy was considered marvellous, so that it will be seen what strides the invention has made in three years. “Yes, the Bible does teach that the world is flat” approximately; and consequently there is no need of “ the law o f gravitation ” to “ draw everything to the centre.” But is this teaching of the Bible true — absolutely true? Yes, and the scientists themselves tacitly admit the fact when they declare that “ the upper surface of a fluid at rest under the action of gravity alone is a horizontal plane, since otherwise, if a part of the surface were higher than the rest,”— don’t you see it ? This is a tacit acknowledgment that the world is NOT A GLOBE!! If the World were a Globe, then of necessity “ a part of the surface ” MUST be “ higher than the rest’’ for as they themselves have owned,“ whichever way you go on a Globe you must go down’’ therefore one part must be higher than the other, and that part is the observer’s standpoint. “You know that there is more water on the earth than dry land. Here is the first proof : The water proves that the earth is flat, level and stationary. Water is liquid. It runs always down and seeks its level, and never runs up unless by power. And the water of the ocean is every way pretty near joined together on the earth, and they call it liquid. It will not stay on a round earth. Take a glass of water and pour it on a round ball and if the water stays on, then the earth must be round, but if the water falls off then the earth must be flat. But it makes no difference, for if the mountains were in the valleys it would leave the land flat and level and higher than the water. I have been thinking of the question for a long time. At last I have found out for myself from the water and the sunbeams, the sun’s rising, the sunlight, etc., that the earth cannot be round and in motion, as books and teachers have taught. The teachers offer proofs to show that the earth is round, but the proofs they offer amount to nothing. When the children go to school, the teacher tells them the world is round, and, of course, they believe it, and they do not ask how it is round. They are young and they know very little. This is a phenomenal characteristic of the north. This being the central region, the diameter of the sun’s orbit in June is much smaller than that of its December or winter solstice, its speed is not so great or rapid as it is in December when on its outer path, or orbit on the Tropic of Capricorn, consequently its rays continue over the northern centre for several months. As we have already intimated, there is a difference between the motion of light from a moving luminous body and the rays of light which flow^ outwards from that moving body. It has generally been assumed in astronomical works that the rays of light coming to us from the sun, speaking generally, move in straight lines from that body to us; though they allow for some little refraction when those rays enter the atmosphere. Often we find in their illustrations, that the sun’s rays are drawn from the sun in parallel straight lines right to the earth. Because light over short distances moves in apparently straight lines on the surface of the earth it is assumed that the rays of the sun must move in straight lines down to us from that body, situated as it is above the atmosphere. But we can easily prove that such assumption is fallacious. Place a long rod, or stick, entirely under water, and the stick will appear quite straight. But place the same rod half under water, and half above it and the rod will seem bent or broken a t the point of contact with the water. This shows that when a body passes, or rather when the rays of light from a body, pass through a medium of uniform density, no bending or curvature is visible ; but that when similar rays of light come to us through media of varying densities, or through the same medium with a changing density, the bending or curvature of the rays must take place. Now the upper parts of the atmosphere, as we have already observed, are much less dense than the lower parts, therefore a ray of light coming down to us from above is refracted more or less out of a straight path. “In the mid 19th century a Frenchman named Léon Foucault became famous for swinging pendulums and claiming their consequent motions were proof of the Earth’s diurnal rotation. Since then “Foucault Pendulums” have regularly been swinging at museums and exposition halls worldwide purporting to provide everlasting perpetual proof of the heliocentric spinning ball-Earth theory. The truth is, however, unbeknownst to most of the duped public, that Foucault’s pendulum is a failed experiment which proves nothing but how easy it is for pseudo-science to deceive the malleable masses. To begin with, Foucault’s pendulums do not uniformly swing in any one direction. Sometimes they rotate clockwise and sometimes counter-clockwise, sometimes they fail to rotate and sometimes they rotate far too much. Scientists who have repeated variations of the experiment have conceded time and again that “it was difficult to avoid giving the pendulum some slight lateral bias at starting.” The behavior of the pendulum actually depends on 1) the initial force beginning its swing and, 2) the ball-and-socket joint used which most-readily facilitates circular motion over any other. The supposed rotation of the Earth is completely inconsequential and irrelevant to the pendulum’s swing. If the alleged constant rotation of the Earth affected pendulums in any way, then there should be no need to manually start pendulums in motion! If the Earth’s diurnal rotation caused the 360 degree uniform diurnal rotation of pendulums, then there should not exist a stationary pendulum anywhere on Earth!” ~Eric Dubay

“The ships set sail from Chatham in the autumn of 1839 and took a year to sail via Madeira, the Cape of Good Hope and Kerguelen Island to Hobart, Tasmania. From Hobart they proceeded to the Auckland Islands, and Campbell Island. On New Year’s Day 1841 they crossed the Antarctic Circle for the first time. Three days later they encountered the pack ice. Ross had heard stories of a “lagoon” of open water beyond the ice in that area. When the ships reached the pack ice with the lagoon in the distance, Ross manoeuvred the ships repeatedly to strike the ice at the same point. This was in itself a remarkable feat of seamanship, given that the ships were powered only by sail. After a week of attempts, the ice broke and they sailed through into the lagoon, where no humans had ever been before. At the far end was the ice barrier itself. Ross estimated it at 180 to 200 feet high and it disappeared over the horizon in both directions. The fact that the sun is over our southern horizon at 12 o’clock and that it is noon along the whole meridian proves that the earth is a plane and stationary and that it is the sun that moves. To place the matter of the sun’s moving above the earth beyond a doubt, the observations of arctic travellers may be quoted. Captain Parry and several of his officers on ascending high land near the arctic circle repeatedly saw for 24 hours the sun describing an arc of a circle upon the northern horizon. During the summer solstice the sun is above the horizon for 16 hours 26 minutes when he is 1035 miles nearer to us than the equator. When on the equator he is above the horizon for 12 hours. The sun, during the summer solstice, being vertical at the tropic of cancer, 1035 miles north of the equator, is the cause of the day being then 3 hours 26 minutes longer than at the equinox.” ~John T. “Other Bible-scientists have proved to be effective debaters. George Bernard Shaw described a public forum in which a flat-earther laid to waste the spherical opposition. Rowbotham was widely known as a tiger on the platform and he was seldom bested. (The good citizens of Leeds, England, once ran him out of town, having been unable to make a more effective reply to his flat-earth arguments.) In Brockport, New York, in March 1887, two scientific gentlemen defended the sphericity of the earth against flat-earther M. C. Flanders on three consecutive nights. When the great debate was over, five townsmen chosen to judge the matter issued a unanimous verdict. Their report, published in the Brockport Democrat stated clearly and emphatically their opinion that the balance of the evidence pointed to a flat-earth. Cash offers are another way Bible-scientists taunt opponents. In the 1920s and 1930s, Wilbur Glenn Voliva of Zion, Illinois, offered $5,000 to anyone who could prove to him that the earth isn’t flat. No one ever collected. At this writing, creationist engineer R. G. Elmendorf has a standing offer of SS,000 to anyone who can prove to him that evolution is possible. Elmendorf is also a geocentrist and offers $1,000 to anyone who can prove that the earth moves. Perhaps someday the scientific creationists will make peace with the flat-earthers. “Last, but hardly least of the Illinois geodesists, was Wilbur Glenn Voliva, America’s best known flat-earther. Voliva was born in Indiana in 1870 and grew up on a farm. He began preaching at sixteen, was ordained at nineteen, and subsequently continued his studies of theology at four different colleges. He served as pastor of several New Light churches; but, in 1899, he joined the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church of Zion, a faith-healing-and-fundamentalism sect headed by John Alexander Dowie. In 1906, he replaced Dowie as General Overseer of the church, then headquartered in Zion, Illinois. Sometime afterward, Zion schools began teaching that the Earth is flat. Voliva believed that the Earth is shaped like a giant flapjack, a circular disk with the north pole at the center and a 150-foot wall of ice at the rim, the “southern limit.” (Obviously you can sail around this world, and Voliva did.) He thought that the Sun was only 1500 miles up and only 32 miles in diameter. The Moon, about the same size, shines by its own light. Lunar eclipses are caused by an unseen dark body passing in front of the Moon. A special law of perspective allows ships to apparently sail over a nonexistent horizon, and this law combines forces with a special law of refraction to cause the apparent rising and setting of celestial bodies.” ~Robert J. All our locomotives are designed to run on what may be regarded as the levels or flats. There are, of course, partial inclines or gradients here and there, but they are always accurately defined, and must be carefully traversed. But anything approaching to ‘ eight inches in the mile, increasing as the square of the distance,’ could not be worked by any engine that was ever yet constructed. Taking one station with another all over England and Scotland, it may be positively stated that all the platforms are on the same relative level. The distance between the eastern and western coasts of England may be set down as three hundred miles. If the prescribed curvature was indeed, as represented, the central stations say at Rugby or Warwick, ought to be close upon three miles higher than a cord drawn from the two extremities. If such was the case, there is not a driver or stoker within the kingdom that would be found to take charge of the train. As long as they know the pretended curve to be mere theory, they do not trouble themselves about what may be stated in the tables of the geographers. But we can only laugh at those of your readers and others who seriously give us credit for such venturesome exploits, as running trains round spherical surfaces. Horizontal curves on levels are dangerous enough; vertical ones would be a thousand times worse, and, with our rolling stock constructed as at present, physically impossible. “Gravity is simply density and buoyancy. People argue that things with different densities fall at the same rate through air. However, that is because both items have reached critical density in relation to its medium: air. If you were to change the medium from air to say, water or liquid mercury, the critical density to achieve the same rate of falling would increase significantly. Critical density is directly proportional to the medium density. Thus the denser the medium… The denser the objects would have to be in order to achieve the same rate of falling. A basketball and a rock might fall at the same speed in air. However… Drop them in a thicker medium like water… And they will not fall at the same rate. That is because critical density has not been achieved by both the rock and the basketball, in water as its medium. In a vacuum… Critical density is zero and is the reason why objects of any density fall at exactly the same rate. The doctrine of the universality of gravitation is a pure assumption, made only in accordance with that ‘pride and ambition’ which has led philosophers to think it beneath them to offer anything less to the world than a complete and finished system of nature. It was said, in effect, by Newton, and has ever since been insisted upon by his disciples: Allow us, without proof, which is impossible, the existence of two universal forces—centrifugal and centripetal, or attraction and repulsion—and we will construct a theory which shall explain all the leading phenomena and mysteries of nature. An apple falling from a tree, or a stone rolling downwards, and a pail of water tied to a string and set in motion, were assumed to be types of the relations existing among all the bodies in the universe. The moon was assumed to have a tendency to fall towards the earth, and the earth and moon together towards the sun. The same relation was assumed to exist between all the smaller and larger luminaries in the firmament; and it soon became necessary to extend these assumptions to affinity. The universe was parcelled out into systems—co-existent and illimitable. Suns, planets, satellites, and comets were assumed to exist infinite in number and boundless in extent; and to enable the theorists to explain alternating and constantly recurring phenomena, which were everywhere observable, these numberless and forever extending objects were assumed to be spheres.” ~Vox, Astronomy and the Bible Reconciled.

Anyone but moderately acquainted with Theoretical Science knows that much which passes current in these days as “Science” is opposed to the plain teachings of the Bible. But this fact gives neither the “Scientist nor his disciple, any concern whatever; because, while he has been taught to doubt, or to discredit the teachings of the Bible, he has never been sufficiently sceptical, or perhaps sufficiently instructed, to doubt the teachings of what is presumptively called “Science.” And in fact the ordinary mortal who dares to question anything advanced in the name of “Science” is considered to be either an ignoramus, or what is called a “crank” and especially so if he dare to stand forth in defence of the Holy Scriptures against so called scientific teaching. But why should “Science” be exempt from criticism and enquiry any more than the Bible? The way some professed Christians treat the Scriptures, where they are opposed to the theories of Science, is discreditable in the extreme; not only to the authority and inspiration of the Scriptures, but discreditable to their own profession and understanding-. They profess to believe that the Bible is inspired of God, yet they apologize for its language, as though the writers were uninspired and ignorant of the fundamental facts of Creation. But may not this ignorance possibly be ours, not theirs? Such conduct is highly reprehensible on the part of those who are in positions where they are paid to defend and to advance Bible teachings and doctrines; and especially where they have never paused to inquire whether the discrepancy found between “Science” and the Bible is due to the ignorance of Bible writers or to the fallacies and unfounded theories of a “Science” which, as Paul says, is ‘falsely so called.” ~Albert Smith, The Sun Standing Still.

“Further, if flying had been invented at the time of Copernicus, there is no doubt that he would have soon realized that his contention regarding the rotation of the earth was wrong, on account of the relation existing between the speed of an aircraft and that of the earth’s rotation. The distance covered by an aircraft would be reduced or increased by the speed of the rotation according to whether such aircraft travelled in the same direction, or against it. Thus, if the earth rotates, as it is said, at 1,000 kilometers an hour, and a plane flies in the same direction at only 500 kilometers, it is obvious that its place of destination will be farther removed every minute. On the other hand, if flying took place in the direction opposite to that of the rotation, a distance of 1,500 kilometers would be covered in one hour, instead of 500, since the speed of the rotation is to be added to that of the plane. It could also be pointed out that such a flying speed of 1,000 kilometers an hour, which is supposed to be that of the earth’s rotation, has recently been achieved, so that an aircraft flying at this rate in the same direction as that of the rotation could not cover any ground at all. It would remain suspended in mid-air over the spot from which it took off, since both speeds are equal. There would, in addition, be no need to fly from one place to another situated on the same latitude. The aircraft could just rise and wait for the desired country to arrive in the ordinary course of the rotation, and then land; although it is difficult to see how any plane can manage to touch ground at all on an airfield which is slipping away at the rate of 1,000 kilometers an hour.” ~Gabrielle Henriet, Heaven and Earth

“The marine horizon, from whatever position it is viewed, always appears to be, and is, in fact, a perfectly level line, and since this appearance is the same in all parts of the world, its surface must be level; and therefore the Earth is a Plane.

This may be proved to be the case, by erecting at a suitable elevation on the sea shore, a duly- levelled board, or a string—at right angles to a plumb-line—tightly stretched between two vertical poles. On looking towards the sea, the horizontal line for a distance of 20 miles may be easily observed, and throughout its entire length it wall be found to coincide with the straight-edge, or string: but if the earth were a globe, the horizontal line would form an area of twenty miles in length, curvating both, ways from the centre, at the rate of eight inches, multiplied by the square of the distance. Hence the horizontal line at either end of the distance ought to be depressed some 66 feet below the horizon in the centre. But as no such appearance is ever presented, it necessarily follows that the earth cannot be a globe, or other than a plane. A minute of arc on the sextant represents a nautical mile, and if the semi-diameter be 16 miles, the diameter is of course 32 miles. And as measured by the sextant, the sun’s diameter is 32 minutes of arc, that is 32 nautical miles in diameter. Let him disprove this who can. It was then my hobby to get the first glimpse of land, make a survey, just as the sun would be rising. The island was clearly in view, well on the starboard bow. I reported this to Capt. Gibson. He then said, ‘you are right,’ and shaped his course accordingly. I had never seen the Island before and could not have described the shape of it had I not seen it. “The distance between the Red Sea at Suez and the Mediterranean Sea is 100 statute miles, the datum line of the Canal being 26 feet below the level of the Mediterranean, and is continued horizontally the whole way from sea to sea, there not being a single lock on the Canal, the surface of the water being parallel with the datum line. It is thus clear that there is no curvature or globularity for the whole hundred miles between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea; had there been, according to the Astronomic theory, the middle of the Canal would have been 1,666 feet higher than at either end, whereas the Canal is perfectly horizontal for the whole distance. The Great Canal of China, said to be 700 miles in length, was made without regard to any allowance for supposed curvature, as the Chinese believe the Earth to be a Stationary Plane. “On a globe of 25,000 statute miles equatorial circumference one has to be 24 feet above sea level to get a horizon of six miles, the ‘curvature’ being 8 inches to the mile and varying inversely with the square of the distance. We are thus taught to believe that what appears at all times of the day to be half a circle, or about 180 degrees, is in reality only a few miles, as the earth rotates against the sun and thus deceives us. But the phenomenon of a lunar eclipse requires, according to astronomical doctrine, that the earth shall be exactly midway between sun and moon, to shut off the light of the sun and thus to darken the moon. Those two ‘bodies’ being then according to the astronomer, opposite each other and the earth between, must each be 90 degrees, or a quarter of a circle distant from an observer on the earth’s surface – that is, half a circle from one to the other. So that what astronomy, on the one hand, teaches is only a few miles distant, the horizon, is thus seen to be, according to its own showing, half a circle for the sun is at one side of one quadrant, and the moon at the other side of another. If, therefore, the observer be on the equator when the phenomenon occurs, he can see, according to astronomical measurement, over 6,000 miles on either side of him, east and west. If in north or south latitude, he would see correspondingly less, but thousands of miles in every case. But, on the other hand, according to the popular theory, he would have to be hoisted 4,000 miles away in space for such a thing to be possible.
